Smile Lines, April, 2017

This is a self-portrait taken by the artist of herself and her mother’s hands interlaced on top of a blanket left in her grandmother’s will. The artist considers the grey wool blanket as an evocative object to learn about and expand her understanding of her maternal relationships. The artist employs the blanket as a background for a tableau where she positions herself and her mother in a powerful embrace. The lines of the blanket suggest time passing through generational lines, forcing the artist to consider what parts of her heritage are worth passing on and which parts should be rewritten. This project was completed for Evelyn’s BFA graduation show at Emily Carr University.
